How many days are enough for Meghalaya?
Short answer: 7 nights and 8 days is ideal for Meghalaya, covering Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki without rushing.
This itinerary is built around Meghalaya’s three signature experiences: Shillong’s waterfalls and colonial-era charm, Cherrapunji’s living root bridges and caves, and the crystal-clear Umngot River at Dawki near the Bangladesh border. Seven nights allows enough time for the root-bridge trek (which involves a fair amount of walking) plus a relaxed pace on the Guwahati-to-Guwahati loop. Travellers with less time can trim to 5–6 nights by skipping Dawki, though that means missing one of the region’s most photographed sights.
What is the best time to visit Meghalaya?
Short answer: October to April is the best time to visit Meghalaya, with dry weather and clear views of the waterfalls and root bridges.
Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on Earth, and its monsoon (roughly May to September) brings heavy, near-daily rain that can disrupt travel and river visibility at Dawki. October to April offers drier trails, clearer skies and the best visibility for the Umngot River’s famous turquoise water. December and January are coolest, sometimes chilly at higher elevations like Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, so a warm layer is worth packing even outside peak winter.

Best Time to Visit Meghalaya
The best time to visit Meghalaya is October to April, when Cherrapunji’s rainfall drops sharply from its monsoon peak, leaving trails, root bridges and viewpoints dry and stable. For trekking to living root bridges like Nongriat’s, November to February is ideal, with clear skies, comfortable 15-25°C daytime temperatures and stone stairways that aren’t slick with monsoon mud. If you’d rather see the waterfalls at their fullest, aim for September to November, when monsoon runoff is still feeding falls like Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters but trails have dried enough to trek safely. June to August is best avoided unless you’re prepared for rain-soaked hikes and cloud-covered viewpoints.
Who This Trip Is For
Couples
Misty hills, waterfall picnics and quiet root-bridge walks make Meghalaya a refreshing, unhurried alternative to the usual hill-station honeymoon circuit.
Families
Short, manageable drives between Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki, plus easy viewpoints alongside the tougher treks, make this a trip families can pace to suit kids and grandparents alike.
Friends & Trekkers
The Nongriat living root bridge trek, Mawsmai caves and Dawki’s crystal-clear river make for a trip with enough physical variety to keep an active group of friends engaged.
Nature Lovers
India’s wettest place, its longest cave systems, living root bridges found nowhere else on earth, and Asia’s cleanest village at Mawlynnong — Meghalaya rewards travellers who come for nature first.
What Most Travellers Get Wrong
Most itineraries list the Living Root Bridge trek at Nongriat as a quick stop, but the reality is different. Reaching the double-decker root bridge from the Tyrna trailhead means descending roughly 3,500 steep stone steps over about 3 km of jungle path — then climbing every one of those steps back up on the return. Budget four to six hours round trip, not two, and start by 7-8am so you’re not descending, or worse climbing back, in fading light. Mobile network is patchy to nonexistent once you’re in the valley, so download offline maps in advance. It’s equally common to underestimate drive times: a Dawki and Mawlynnong day trip from Shillong alone involves over five hours of driving before you count any sightseeing, so don’t try to stack too many stops into one day.
