What is the best time to visit Kinnaur & Spiti?
Short answer: Mid-June to early October is the best time, when the high mountain passes are open.
Spiti Valley sits at high altitude and its key passes are snowbound for most of the year, so the route is realistically accessible only from around mid-June through early October. July–August coincides with peak monsoon in the rest of Himachal but Spiti lies in a rain-shadow zone and stays largely dry, making it a popular monsoon escape. September offers clearer skies and cooler temperatures, while late May and early June can still have snow-blocked sections depending on the year.

Best Time to Visit Kinnaur & Spiti
The Kinnaur-Spiti circuit is only open for a few months each year, typically June through September, once winter snow clears the Kunzum and Rohtang passes. Because Kinnaur sits on the Himalayan monsoon’s windward side while Spiti lies in its rain shadow, July and August can bring landslides on the Shimla-Kinnaur highway even as Spiti itself stays largely dry. June and September, either side of peak monsoon, generally offer the most stable driving conditions on the Kinnaur leg. Days are warm across the route but nights turn cold quickly above 3,000m, especially around Kaza and Chandratal, so pack for near-freezing temperatures even in summer. Roads close again by early October as snow returns to the high passes.

What Most Travellers Get Wrong
Kinnaur-Spiti’s biggest risk isn’t the road, it’s the altitude. Kaza sits around 3,800m and Chandratal near 4,300m, and jumping there too quickly from lower elevations is the most common cause of altitude sickness on this trip. Give your body a day or two to acclimatise at intermediate stops like Kalpa or Sangla rather than pushing straight through, stay well hydrated, and avoid alcohol and heavy exertion for the first day at altitude. It’s also easy to underestimate how remote this route is: mobile network is patchy to nonexistent for long stretches, ATMs are scarce beyond Kaza, and fuel stations are limited, so carry cash and top up fuel whenever you can rather than waiting until the tank runs low. Weather can close the Kunzum or Rohtang passes without much notice even in summer, so build a buffer day or two into your schedule rather than a tightly back-to-back itinerary.

Spiti Long winding roads and valleys that present unforgettable glimpses of cold desert and snow-crowned mountains welcome you when you set foot into Spiti Valley. Bordered on all sides by the Himalayas, Spiti gets just around 250 days of sunshine in the year, making it one of the coldest places in the country. With the thick Himalayan snow cutting Spiti off from the rest of the country for around 6 months a year, the summer months are the only time Spiti is directly accessible via motorway.
It takes a certain amount of madness to do this. Spiti Valley is a cold desert mountain valley located high in the Himalayas, is full of barren hills, bare mountainsides, rough terrain, and more like a dry desert. Spiti, which loosely translates as ‘the middle land’. In certain stretches NH5 (the old Hindu- stan- Tibet Road) is amazing, but what makes up for this is the gorgeous landscape that changes as one drive through the lush mountains of Kinnaur Valley and crosses into the rugged moonscape of Spiti valley. It just takes one thing to get going for this trip – passion for traveling – and we have that in abundance.

It’s a long road trip with high-altitude stops. No technical trekking is involved, but altitude can be tiring, especially around Kaza and Chandratal.
