How many days are enough for Kashmir?

Short answer: 5 nights and 6 days is enough to cover Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg at a comfortable pace.

This itinerary is built around Kashmir’s three signature stops: houseboat and Dal Lake experiences in Srinagar, the meadows and pony rides of Pahalgam, and the high-altitude gondola rides in Gulmarg. Five nights allows a relaxed pace with one full day in each destination plus travel time between them. Travellers who also want to add Sonmarg or Drang Valley should budget 1–2 extra nights.

Kashmir Tour Package: Dal Lake houseboats with snow-capped mountains in the background

What is the best time to visit Kashmir?

Short answer: Kashmir is a year-round destination, with April–October best for sightseeing and December–February best for snow.

Spring (April–May) brings blooming gardens and mild weather; summer (June–August) offers cool relief from the plains with average highs around 25\u00b0C; autumn (September–October) turns the chinar trees golden and is popular for photography. Winter (December–February) brings heavy snowfall and sub-zero nights, ideal for skiing at Gulmarg but with some roads occasionally affected by weather.

Best Time to Visit Kashmir

Kashmir has two main visiting windows. Spring, from March to May, brings snowmelt streams and blooming almond and tulip blossoms, plus mild days good for sightseeing in Srinagar and Pahalgam. Summer, from June to August, is peak season — Gulmarg’s meadows turn green, temperatures stay a cool 15-25°C, and this is when families travel to escape the plains’ heat, though hotels and houseboats book out early.

Autumn, September to early November, paints the chinar trees gold and offers clear mountain views with thinner crowds. Winter, December to February, transforms Gulmarg into a snow-sports hub with skiing, though Srinagar’s houseboats can feel cold and some higher passes close.

For most travellers on this itinerary, April to October offers the most reliable weather.

Who This Trip Is For

The Honeymoon Couple

Shikara rides at sunset on Dal Lake, a houseboat stay, and quiet valley views in Pahalgam make this a popular first-anniversary or honeymoon route without needing a longer international trip.

The Family With Kids

Gulmarg’s gondola ride and snow play (in season), short walks in Pahalgam, and comfortable houseboat stays make Kashmir an easy first mountain trip for children.

The Photography Enthusiast

Chinar-lined avenues, floating markets on Dal Lake, and the meadows of Gulmarg and Drang Valley offer a wide range of landscapes within a short, well-paced itinerary.

The First-Time Kashmir Visitor

This fixed 5N/6D route covers Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg’s highlights without requiring you to plan logistics yourself, ideal if this is your first visit to the valley.

What Most Travellers Get Wrong About This Kashmir Tour Package

Many travellers assume Kashmir can be covered properly in two or three days, but Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg each deserve at least a day of their own — rushing between them means long drive times and little time to actually enjoy the shikara ride or the gondola.

Another common mistake is booking a summer trip expecting cool mountain weather without packing layers; even in June, evenings in Gulmarg and Pahalgam turn cold once the sun sets, and Srinagar’s houseboats can feel damp overnight.

Travellers also frequently underestimate optional costs — the Gulmarg gondola’s second phase, pony rides, and garden entry fees are usually not part of a package’s core inclusions and can add up.

Finally, many skip advance houseboat bookings during peak season (May-July), only to find their preferred category full — Dal Lake’s better-located houseboats fill up weeks ahead, so confirming this early in planning avoids a late substitution to a less central stay.

Travel Essentials

  • Nearest Airport: Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar — the gateway for this circuit.
  • Nearest Railway Station: Srinagar Railway Station has limited connectivity within the valley; Jammu Tawi is the nearest major railhead well-connected to the rest of India.
  • Permit Required?: No special permit needed for Indian nationals on this Srinagar-Pahalgam-Gulmarg circuit; foreign nationals should check current travel advisories before booking.
  • Network Availability: Coverage in Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg is generally reliable, though mobile and internet access in Kashmir has been restricted at short notice in the past — check current status before travel and consider a local postpaid SIM.
  • Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate — mostly road travel and short walks; the Gulmarg gondola and pony rides are optional and suit most fitness levels.
  • Packing Essentials: Warm layers or a down jacket (evenings are cool even in summer), a waterproof jacket, sturdy walking shoes, sunscreen for high-altitude UV, and a power bank.

🧭 Travel Expert Tip
Spend one night on a Dal Lake houseboat but base the rest of your stay on land - houseboats are romantic for a night but limit your flexibility to catch early sunrise light at Gulmarg or Pahalgam.
⚠️ What Most Travellers Get Wrong About Kashmir
Most travellers visiting for snow assume any winter month works. Gulmarg's Gondola and snow activities are weather-dependent and can shut for days during heavy snowfall - late December to February has the most reliable snow cover, but always keep a buffer day in the itinerary.
🎒 Packing Tips
  • Heavy winter layers for Dec-Feb trips - Gulmarg regularly sees sub-zero nights
  • Waterproof snow boots, not just warm shoes
  • A light shawl/scarf for houseboat evenings even in warmer months
  • Sunglasses - snow glare at Gulmarg is intense
📸 Photography Tips
Shikara boats on Dal Lake are most photogenic at sunrise, when the water is glass-still before the day's boat traffic starts. At Gulmarg, the Gondola's second stage (Apharwat) clears of cloud most reliably in the early morning.
🛡️ Safety Tips
Check current regional travel advisories before finalizing dates. On snow activities at Gulmarg, use only registered operators and provided safety gear. Roads to Pahalgam and Gulmarg can close temporarily after heavy snow - build a flexible day into your plan.

Kashmir receives a large number of domestic and international tourists every year, and Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg are well-established tourist circuits. As with any destination, we recommend checking current travel advisories closer to your travel date and following your tour guide’s local guidance.

Indian nationals do not need a special permit to visit Srinagar, Pahalgam, or Gulmarg on this itinerary. Foreign nationals should carry a valid passport and visa; our team can advise on any area-specific requirements closer to your travel date.

Pack layered clothing since evenings in Gulmarg and Pahalgam can be cool even in summer, comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket or fleece, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a scarf or shawl. In winter, carry heavier woollens, gloves, and waterproof footwear.
