How many days are enough for Leh Ladakh?

6 Nights / 7 Days is the standard length for a Leh Ladakh circuit, allowing a full acclimatization day in Leh before heading to higher altitudes at Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake — a gradual altitude gain that’s important for comfort and safety at these elevations.

What is the best time to visit Leh Ladakh?

June to September is the ideal window, when Khardung La, Nubra Valley, and Pangong Lake are all accessible by road and the weather is clear. Roads to these high-altitude areas are typically closed the rest of the year due to snow.

Best Time to Visit Leh Ladakh

The road-accessible season for this itinerary runs from June to September, when Khardung La pass, Nubra Valley, Turtuk, and Pangong Lake are all open and reachable. July and August see the clearest skies and warmest days, though nights stay cold even in summer. Outside this window, snow closes the high passes and this circuit generally cannot be completed by road.

Who This Trip Is For

Adventure Travellers

Crossing Khardung La, camping in Nubra and Pangong, and an optional camel safari on the sand dunes make this a genuine high-altitude adventure for travellers who want more than standard sightseeing.

Road-Trip and Photography Enthusiasts

Dramatic mountain passes, the double-humped Bactrian camels of Nubra, the northernmost village of Turtuk, and the ever-changing blues of Pangong Lake offer some of India’s most photogenic landscapes.

First-Time Ladakh Visitors

A built-in acclimatization day in Leh before heading to higher altitudes, plus an oxygen cylinder carried for emergencies, make this a safer, well-paced introduction to high-altitude travel.

Friend Groups

Camping with a bonfire in Nubra and Pangong, a dedicated Team Leader throughout, and shared Innova/Tempo Traveller transport make this an easy trip to plan and travel together as a group.

What Most Travellers Get Wrong

  • The first day in Leh is for acclimatization only — only a visit to Shanti Stupa is planned, since altitude sickness is a real risk if you push too hard on arrival day.
  • Camel safari at the Nubra sand dunes and any pony, doli, or adventure activity charges at any destination are optional and not included in the package price.
  • Meals other than those specified in the itinerary, alcohol and other beverages, and any destination not mentioned in the itinerary are excluded.
  • Entrance and camera fees at monuments and museums, laundry, telephone charges, and medical or travel insurance are not included.
  • Inner Line Permits (ILP) are included in the package price and arranged for all travellers, so no separate permit paperwork is needed from you.

🧭 Travel Expert Tip
Do nothing but rest on your first full day in Leh (11,500 ft) - no sightseeing, no short drives. Altitude sickness in Ladakh most often hits people who felt fine on arrival and pushed straight into activity.
⚠️ What Most Travellers Get Wrong About Leh Ladakh
Most travellers think Pangong Lake is a quick day trip from Leh. It's a 4-5 hour drive each way over an 18,000 ft pass - doing it as a same-day round trip is exhausting and risky at altitude; an overnight stay at the lake is strongly preferable.
🎒 Packing Tips
  • Heavy-duty sunscreen and lip balm - UV is intense at altitude
  • Warm layers for every season - nights are cold even in July
  • Diamox (consult your doctor) and a pulse oximeter
  • Polarized sunglasses for glare off high-altitude lakes
📸 Photography Tips
Pangong Lake shifts colour through the day - the deepest blues are usually mid-morning before haze builds up. For Khardung La, shoot early to avoid the midday crowd of vehicles at the summit signboard.
🛡️ Safety Tips
Acclimatize for a minimum of 24-48 hours in Leh before going higher. Know the symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness) and descend immediately if they appear. Fuel up whenever possible - petrol stations are sparse beyond Leh.
