5 Nights 6 Days

Total Amount: Start from Rs. 19,500/- per person

How many days are enough for a Tamil Nadu temple and hills tour?5 Nights / 6 Days is ideal for covering Rameshwaram’s Ramanathaswamy Temple and the Kodaikanal hill station comfortably, without rushing either. This gives you a full day for Rameshwaram’s temple and the Pamban Bridge area, a scenic drive back through Madurai, and three unhurried days in Kodaikanal to cover the lake, viewpoints, and a flexible activity day.
What is the best time to visit Rameshwaram and Kodaikanal?October to March works best for both legs of this trip. Rameshwaram and Madurai sit on the plains and get very hot from April to June, so the cooler months make temple visits far more comfortable. Kodaikanal, at over 2,100 metres, stays pleasant almost year-round, but October to June (avoiding the July-September monsoon) gives the clearest views from its viewpoints.

Best Time to Visit Tamil Nadu (Rameshwaram & Kodaikanal) Rameshwaram and Madurai sit on the coastal and inland plains of Tamil Nadu, where temperatures climb well past 35 degrees Celsius between April and June. The most comfortable window for temple visits and sightseeing here is October through March, when daytime temperatures settle into the high twenties and the coastal breeze at Rameshwaram makes walking around the temple corridors and Pamban Bridge area far more pleasant. Kodaikanal, perched above 2,100 metres in the Palani Hills, has a different climate altogether – cool and misty for most of the year, with daytime temperatures rarely climbing above the mid-twenties. October to June is the clearest stretch for viewpoints like Coaker’s Walk and Pillar Rocks, while the July-September monsoon brings heavy mist and rain that can limit visibility, though it’s also when the hills are at their greenest.

Who This Trip Is For

Pilgrimage & Spiritual TravellersRameshwaram’s Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the Char Dham and holds deep significance in the Ramayana – this trip is built around giving it a full, unhurried day.
Hill-Station Lovers & HoneymoonersThree days in Kodaikanal – its star-shaped lake, misty viewpoints, and cool climate – make this a natural pick for couples wanting a relaxed hill escape after the temple leg.
FamiliesA gentle pace with boating, viewpoint drives, and a flexible activity day in Kodaikanal suits travellers with children or elderly parents better than a packed sightseeing schedule.
Photography EnthusiastsFrom the painted pillared corridors of Rameshwaram’s temple to Kodaikanal’s mist-wrapped cliff viewpoints, this route covers two very different, highly photogenic landscapes.
What Most Travellers Get Wrong About This Tamil Nadu TripPacking for one climate instead of two is the most common mistake – Rameshwaram and Madurai can be hot and humid while Kodaikanal, just a day’s drive away, needs a light jacket, especially in the early morning and evening. Temple dress code at Ramanathaswamy Temple is stricter than many first-time visitors expect – men are generally required to be bare-chested or in traditional attire to enter certain inner areas, and both men and women should avoid shorts and sleeveless tops; carrying a change of clothes for the temple visit avoids a last-minute scramble. Many travellers also assume Dhanushkodi (the abandoned ghost town at the tip of the Rameshwaram peninsula) is included by default – it’s a separate side excursion by jeep from the main temple town, so it’s worth confirming with us in advance if you’d like it added. Finally, treating Kodaikanal’s “exploration” and “adventure or relaxation” days as one rushed sightseeing block instead of two distinct days undersells the hill station – spreading viewpoints, the lake, and any optional trekking across both days gives a far more relaxed experience.

🧭 Travel Expert Tip
Visit the major temple towns (Madurai, Thanjavur) early in the morning when temples open - the towering gopuram gateways and inner sanctums are far less crowded, and temple rituals often happen at dawn.
⚠️ What Most Travellers Get Wrong About Tamil Nadu
Most travellers try to combine Tamil Nadu's temple towns with a hill station like Ooty in one short trip. The drive from the plains up into the hills is slow and winding - treat it as a distinct leg of the journey with its own dedicated days, not a quick add-on.
🎒 Packing Tips
  • Light, breathable clothing - Tamil Nadu's plains stay warm most of the year
  • Modest clothing for temple visits (shoulders/knees covered)
  • Comfortable sandals that slip off easily for frequent temple entries
  • A light jacket if the itinerary includes a hill station
📸 Photography Tips
Temple gopurams are most striking in the golden light of early morning or late afternoon, when the carved stone figures catch strong shadow detail. Ask before photographing worshippers mid-ritual.
🛡️ Safety Tips
Temple floors are often bare stone and can be hot underfoot at midday - time visits for cooler hours. Keep hydrated in the plains heat. Follow local guidance on which inner temple areas are open to non-Hindu visitors.
Travel Insight
The state where temple towers were built taller than most medieval castles
Several Tamil Nadu temple gopurams, like Madurai's Meenakshi Temple, rise over 150 feet and are covered in thousands of hand-carved and painted mythological figures - some of the most elaborate religious architecture anywhere in the world.
